Toddler Safe Ornaments

Last year, Evan not once made an attempt to swipe anything off the Christmas tree. In fact, he seemed completely unaware of his surroundings. I knew then that he was autistic.

In the last year, Evan has made a lot of progress. He is a LOT more active, aware of his surroundings and a more "typical" toddler. I don't think the Christmas tree is going to be untouched by any means.

Rather than putting on glass balls that Evan can break or he can cut himself on, I decided to pull out some retired DSP that I thought would make pretty Christmas decorations. This is the Wintergreen DSP--I think it was from back in 2007. Aren't the colors pretty? I think it's Sage Shadow, Certainly Celery, Soft Sky and Always Artichoke. I rummaged through my retired ribbon and found Soft Sky stitched ribbon. (I'm glad I never get rid of anything...LOL)

These are so quick and easy to make. It wouldn't take long to make a bunch for your tree this season. :)

Supplies:
DSP, paper cutter, 2 brads, ribbon and cord/floss for hanger.
How to make paper strip ornaments:
*Cut 1" x 6" strips of DSP (I used 10 strips for my ornaments)
*Put them in a stack and punched a hole in the center of the top and bottom
of each strip about 1/4" from the end of the strip.
*Cut a piece of ribbon long enough to make a good size bow.
*Folded the ribbon in half (lengthways) and shoved a brad through it
*Insert the brad w/ ribbon in the top hole of the strips
*Fan out the strips
* Insert another brad through the bottom of the strips forming a ball.
* Make your bow
* Take a bit of floss or cord and make a hanger for your ornament. (I used a
needle and ran it through the backside of the ribbon)

  3. I made these as pumpkins for Halloween and Thanksgiving decor. I tried to think of a use for Christmas and couldn't imagine an ornament (duh!), but these are really cute. A spritz of Shimmer Paint could give them that extra touch. Terry Schultz

  4. I remember the days of not being able to use the glass ornaments. One year we put the tree in the play pen and it worked out great. After that my kids would just lay under the tree and watch the lights from below. LOL, never did figure out what thrilled them to do that.
Anyway, love your ornaments Wendy, I did them as pumpkins one year.

  5. What a great idea-nice ornaments. Not only will the kids be safe but so will the animals if you have cats or/and dogs.
